This odd looking machine was introduced by BMW in 1997 as an addition to it's Z3 range. In order to improve the handling of the Z3 Roadster, BMW decided to introduce a Coupe version, which would be stiffer and therefore sharper handling than the Roadster. From the window line down it is essentially the same as the soft top car, but it's unusual roofline endows the car with looks that you either love or hate! I have to say I think it looks great! It looks like nothing else on the road today, which is praise indeed when modern cars are forever being criticized for all looking alike.
Mechanically it was no different from the Roadster, and it was offered with the same range of engines as the soft top car, except for the UK and Irish markets, where it was only sold in top spec M-Coupe form. With 321bhp on tap, it made for an exciting drive. In fact, Top Gear Magazine voted it their Drivers Car of the Year in 2000.
This model was made by UT. It is accurate to 1:18th scale (unlike the Bburrago Z3) and has a nicely detailed, realistic interior and good looking bodywork. The five spoke alloys on the car are very impressive indeed! One criticism is that the rear hatch does not open, which is a pity as it is a nice shape and would look good open or closed. Additionally it has almost no brake detail which is a pity as the brake discs are easily seen through the large alloy wheels.
