Chevrolet introduced this performance version of the Caprice in 1994, reviving the Impala name that had not been in use since the 1970's. It has a 5.7 litre V-8 producing 260bhp, and consequently was a serious performer.
Originally available in black only, with five spoke alloys and lowered suspension, it certainly looked the business. Unfortunately, Chevrolet decided to end production of the Caprice line after the 1996 model year, and the Impala SS died with it. GM wanted the Caprice factory for extra capacity to build it's more popular (and more profitable) line of sport-utility vehicles.
This model is by UT, who also made a range of police and taxi versions of the Chevy Caprice. It certainly is an attractive model (as well as imposing in size), but some of it's detailing is not up to UT's usual high standard. The interior is a bit bland and the rear doors and boot lid do not open. However, the engine bay is nicely represented and the build quality is first class. AUTOart (who took over UT in 1999) have now re-released this model in slightly different form with better detailing (in 2002).
