For CanAm's first season, the car to beat was the pretty looking Lola T70. Developed by Eric Broadley's Lola company in the UK, it was the predominant car used by many teams in CanAm in 1966. During it's CanAm career, the T70 was powered by a variety of engines from many different manufacturers, the most successful of which was Chevrolet. A Ford powered car only scored a single win in CanAm, and it happened during the first season in 1966. This Ford powered Lola driven by Dan Gurney won at Bridgehampton to score that only win for the blue oval in group 7 (as CanAm was classed internationally).
The Ford V8 used a comparatively small (when compared to the big block Chevrolet V8s) 305 cubic inch (5 litre) block equipped with Gurney-Weslake cylinder heads, producing around 495bhp. Dan Gurney was to lead further CanAm races in 1966 but poor reliability prevented another win.
This model of Gurney's Lola was GMPs first release in this new line of Lola T70s. It has a super paintjob, a nicely detailed Ford V8 and very smart looking wheels and tires. Interior detail could be a little sharper, and the only opening part on this model is the rear bodywork (which opens to reveal the engine and the gearbox). Overall it is a nice model of an interesting race car.
