Mercedes-Benz L6600 by Minichamps

Mercedes-Benz L6600 by Minichamps

This monster is easily the biggest model in my collection. Introduced by Mercedes-Benz in 1950, the L6600 was the first new truck design introduced by the company after World War II. The 6600 in the name refers to the carrying capacity of the truck, which was 6.6 metric tons (6600kgs). This particular version has a flatbed load area with drop down sides and a tailgate, which is covered by canvas supported by a metal and wood frame. Powered by a large capacity diesel straight six engine, this truck was a capable heavy goods vehicle ideal for the needs of the reviving post WWII German economy.

Minichamps are well known for making superb truck and bus models in 1:43rd scale. This monster is their first 1:18th scale truck, and I personally hope they release further trucks in this larger scale as I really like unusual models like this one! For such a large model, it has lots of fine features including good engine and interior detail, and a removable canvas top. On the roof of the cab is a small folding triangular sign. Under German rules of the road, this sign was put in the upright position to warn other vehicles that the truck was towing a trailer. No trailer is included with this model, but I believe Minichamps plan to release a two axle truck trailer for this truck. It has a functioning trailer hitch at the rear end ready for any future trailer releases in 1:18th scale. A tanker truck version has also been announced, and a colourful yellow German post office version was released as a limited edition.

The biggest problem with this model for me is the difficulty in displaying it! Luckily the top shelf of my display cabinet has more overhead space than the lower shelves so this truck fits in, just! One of my more unusual (hence one of my favourite!) models.
