Strictly speaking this 1972 GTO is really a LeMans GTO, as 1972 saw the end of the GTO as a separate model. Instead reverted back to it's roots as an option package on the mid-size LeMans coupe (as the first 1964 GTO was). Essentially it was the same as the 1971 GTO coupe (no GTO Convertibles were offered in 1972) with minor changes to the front end and new air vents behind the front wheels. There were 3 engine options, a 400ci V8, and two 455ci V8s. The more powerful of the two 455ci engines produced 300bhp, which was down from the 1971 GTOs, and as a result the 1972 GTO was noticeably slower than it's predecessors. The loss of power was due to lower compression ratios required to meet new stricter emissions standards and to try and obtain a lower insurance rating for the car as premiums on cars like the GTO had gone through the roof.
The days of large annual sales for the GTO had gone and only 5,807 in total were sold in the 1972 model year.
GMP make this fine model of the 1972 LeMans GTO and it is one of the nicest models they make. The gold paint look great and along with the rest of their GTO range it has great engine and interior detail. 8.5/10 marks overall.
