Since it's introduction in 1975, the 911 Turbo has been more or less the top performing 911. The original car had a reputation of being a tricky beast to drive, having pronounced turbo-lag that could send the inexperienced driver backwards into a hedge if he or she lifted off the power in the middle of a fast corner. However, the 993 series 911 Turbo had a far more advanced twin-turbo system (allowing far more progressive power delivery across the rev-range) and the added security of a full-time 4 wheel drive system.
Introduced in 1993 as part of the new 993 series range of 911's, the Turbo was an impressive machine which pumped out 408bhp from it's turbo-charged mill. Purists preferred the "basic" 2 wheel drive 911, but for sheer performance the Turbo was hard to beat.
The 993 series 911 gave way to the new 996 series in 1997. The Turbo 996 version was introduced in 2000 and is still one of the finest performance cars in the world bar none. AUTOart make a superb model of the newer 996 series Turbo of which I have one in silver.
This model was made by UT Models, and is no longer made as UT was absorbed by the Gateway Global group in 1999 (the parent company of AUTOart) and the brand was discontinued. The finish and build quality are good, but I feel the interior is very plasticky and grey with no carpeting or headlining. Engine detail is almost non-existent and the brake discs lack callipers. UT also released a 993 series Turbo S (a higher performing version of the regular Turbo) which has slightly more detail than this model. Perhaps not one of my favorites then, but still a model worth having. Be sure to listen to how the real thing sounds below!
