Off-Roaders, 4x4's, SUV's, Jeep's, etc. are big in the automotive world, both literally and in terms of popularity. Manufacturers love them as they generate huge profits, buyers because they enjoy the image conveyed by driving a big go-anywhere machine and armies everywhere would literally be stuck without them.
Not everybody has such affection for these big machines. Environmentalists decry them as gas-guzzlers which when used off-road (which they rarely are!) destroy the countryside, and safety campaigners are quick to point out the devastation which results when you are unfortunate enough to collide with one. They are often great looking though, and it is cool to know you could cross a desert or a mountain range in one, even if the most challenging thing you do in your 4x4 is mount the occasional curb!
